Carrie Sargent, school psychologist at West Charlotte High School, was recognized as the 2025-26 School Psychologist of the Year for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Sargent was named in front of her peers during a meeting at the Bishop Spaugh Administrative Center.
“I was amongst very good company with all the other psychologists who were nominated, so it was wonderful,” Sargent said about the recognition.
The School Psychologist of the Year award is an annual recognition of a school-based psychologist who exemplifies high-quality service and has a significant impact on their school community.
With 23 years in school psychology, Sargent said being a school psychologist is one of the most fun jobs. At West Charlotte, Sargent runs a grief counseling group as well as the Sources of Strength program — an upstream suicide prevention and mental health program — that students have taken to and that she has found to be very meaningful work.
“I love going to work and I love working with the students and I love being able to see the change that you can have in their lives permanently just from your job,” said Sargent.
“Ms. Sargent’s work is consistently grounded in what is best for students and families,” read her nomination. “Through her dedication, care and unwavering commitment to students, she has helped create a school environment where students feel supported, staff feel empowered and the entire community feels seen. Her work leaves a lasting, meaningful impact, and West Charlotte High School is better for it.”
